This is the ninth of several series of talks on Matthew’s gospel by Sean Kehoe. In this series of 11 talks, he takes us through chapters 24-25 of Matthew, sometimes known as the “Olivet Discourse”. This series also comes under the heading of the End Time Prophecy Series.
In these two chapters in Matthew, Jesus told the disciples many things about what will be coming in the future and how the Kingdom will be established. In order for us to make proper sense of what Jesus was saying at that time in these chapters, it is necessary to have some knowledge of what the Old Testament prophets said, as well as some Jewish customs. Therefore, in this series, Sean makes significant reference to other prophetic writings, so as to present a fuller picture of the whole subject. He also covers the parallel passage in Luke 21.
The series starts with an introductory talk in order to establish some background and context, which will be useful to know before addressing the text of these chapters. There are also two talks about the Rapture. He explains how we know that the Rapture is a different event to the Second Coming of Jesus and that the Rapture is “imminent”. This means it can occur at any time, even one second from now, and that nothing needs to take place beforehand. He also takes the view that the Rapture will occur before the Tribulation begins. Although the text of Matthew 24-25 does not cover the Rapture. Sean felt that it would be very helpful to include these two talks within this series for the sake of completeness.
Sean’s aim is not only to explain the text, but also to draw our attention to how we can apply it in our lives today. (This whole commentary series on Matthew has been divided into several mini series in order to reduce the time required to load up the page.)
